The most believable content about your business is already standing behind the counter.

Brands spend heavily on creators to look authentic, while the people who actually make the product, serve the customers and know every detail are rarely on camera. Employee-generated content — content made by or featuring your team — is often the most trusted, cheapest and most consistent content a business can produce.

Why it works

  • Credibility. Viewers can tell the difference between someone reading a script and someone who does the job every day.
  • Volume. A team generates moments constantly — opening up, the first batch, a busy Saturday, a regular's order.
  • Recruiting. The same content that sells to customers shows future hires what it is like to work there.
  • Reach. Staff share content with their own networks, which are often local and exactly your audience.

Content ideas that work for almost any business

  1. “What I would order” — staff favourites, with a reason
  2. A day in the life — from opening to close
  3. How it is made — the process, explained by the person who does it
  4. Answering customer questions — the questions staff hear every day make perfect short videos
  5. Meet the team — short introductions, one person at a time
  6. Behind the scenes of launches, events and busy days

Set it up properly

  • Make it voluntary. Never require staff to appear on camera. Invite, and let enthusiasm spread.
  • Get written consent. A simple release covering how their image will be used, including in ads, and what happens if they leave the company.
  • Pay for it or reward it. If content is part of someone's role, it should be recognised in their pay, hours or bonuses — not an unpaid extra.
  • Give light guidelines. What is fine to film, what is private (customers' faces, back-office information, pricing talks), and the tone of the brand.
  • Make it easy. A shared folder to drop clips into, a phone mount, a ring light, and one person who edits and posts.

Combine it with creators, don't replace them

Team content builds trust with people who already know you. Creators bring you to people who do not. The best programmes run both: staff for depth and consistency, creators for reach. Our pieces on building a UGC pipeline and writing a brief that works apply to both.

Pair it with founder-led content and a business shows three honest perspectives: the person who started it, the people who run it, and the customers who love it.

Using team content in ads

Employee videos often make excellent ads because they look native to the feed. Before running them as paid media, confirm consent covers advertising, and plan what happens to live ads if that person leaves. See UGC ads for the formats that convert.

What to measure

  • Engagement and saves on team content versus branded content
  • Posting consistency — the easiest win employee content delivers
  • Ad performance of team-made creative
  • Job applications mentioning your social content

The bottom line

Your team already has the stories, the knowledge and the credibility. Invite them in voluntarily, get consent in writing, reward the work, make it easy, and pair it with creators for reach.
